Stage career

Ryan worked steadily for the following ten years Off-Broadway and in regional theatre, where she made roles in new plays by Neil LaBute, Arthur Miller, and Neil Simon. She was appointed for the National Tour of Biloxi Blues shortly after graduating from high school. 1993 saw Tess, in The Sisters Rosensweig, make her Broadway debut. She took over for Calista Flockhart, who left the play in 1997 to star in the television series Ally McBeal, in a 1997 revival of The Three Sisters.
