Stage career

Ryan worked steadily for the following ten years Off-Broadway and in regional theatre, where she made roles in new plays by Neil LaBute, Arthur Miller, and Neil Simon. She was appointed for the National Tour of Biloxi Blues shortly after graduating from high school. 1993 saw Tess, in The Sisters Rosensweig, make her Broadway debut. She took over for Calista Flockhart, who left the play in 1997 to star in the television series Ally McBeal, in a 1997 revival of The Three Sisters.

Ryan was nominated for the first of her two Best Supporting Actress Tony Awards in 2000 for her character of Uncle Vanya’s love-starved Sonya. After a brief appearance as a runaway on As the World Turns, Ryan started getting roles in prestigious TV shows like I’ll Fly Away, where she got to play a high school temptress, and Brooklyn Bridge, where she showed up as Marion Ross in flashback scenes. Ryan rose to fame as the spoiled step-daughter of Tea Leoni after guest appearances on ER and Chicago Hope.

Ryan gained the attention of director Sidney Lumet in 2001, and she was given three very different roles in the film 100 Centre Street (Ellen, Paris, and Rebecca). Ryan later played Port Authority Officer Beadie Russell in a major role in the second season of HBO’s The Wire. She has also made appearances in several episodes of NBC’s Law & Order.
