Gopi Sundar – Early Life
Born to Suresh Babu and Livi, Gopi Sundar spent most of his childhood in Kochi. His father had a recording studio. Gopi developed an interest in music when working with his father at the recording studio. He was also fond of listening to the music on radio with his mother.
It is stated that Sundar was much more interested in playing tabla and keyboard when young than in studies. He ultimately dropped out of school after failing the SSLC examination. The best part is that his parents kept supporting him in his vision of becoming a musician. He went to Chennai and joined the Government Music College to learn music. However, he left it mid-way, as he felt disillusioned.
Gopi Sundar – Career
Thanks to the efforts and support from his father, Gopi Sundar joined the music troupe of Malayalam composer Ouseppachan. Initially, he began playing tabla and keyboard. But eventually, his composing skills caught the attention of his fellow musicians. It was during this time that Gopi began composing jingles. He is said to have composed over 5,000 jingles for different brands.
Later on, he went to join the Bollywood music composer Vishal-Shekhar as the keyboard programmer. he worked with the Vishal Shekhar duo on hits like ‘Ek Main Aur Ek Tu Hai’ (‘Bluffmaster!’) and ‘Aankhon Mein Teri’ (‘Om Shanti Om’) and the music of the 2006 film ‘Taxi No. 9211’.
His first film as a music composer was Notebook in 2006. Rosshan Andrews’ musical drama made Gopi Sundar an overnight success. In the following year, he went on to compose music for the Malayalam film ‘Flash’ which had Mohanlal in the lead. It was in the same year that he made his Bollywood entry as the composer with Dhol.
The music composer did not have to look back after this. He had a solid footing in the Malayalam film industry. The 2010 film ‘Anwar’. fetches him the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. He also won the Asianet Film Award for Best Music Director and the Pearl Award for Best Background Score for his 2012 film Ustad Hotel.
He made a debut in the Telugu film industry with the 2015 romance drama ‘Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju’.

Gopi Sundar is married to Priya and the couple have two children. However, Priya and Sundar have now separated and their divorce is still pending in court. He went on to have a live-in relationship with singer Abhaya Hiranmayi. In 2018, Gopi Sundar revealed that they have been together for the last 9 years.
