Many questions arises in the mind of every mother before introducing first foods to baby. This food will be accepted by baby or not? It will be suitable or not? If the baby is allergic to it or not? And so many…..
When to start solid foods-
- When you think your baby is ready for it. A lot of babies have their first tooth sprouted in 4-5 months, so when that happens it is probably a good time to start solids.
- When you feel that baby’s hunger is not getting satisfied with just milk.
- When baby should be able to hold her neck properly and should be able to sit, at least with support.
- The tongue thrust, in which the baby pushes out the food, should be gone.
- WHO recommends exclusive breast feeding till 6 months and then starting solids.
What to start with and with which food
First bites are a big milestone in baby’s life. Babies don’t eat much that is why it is important to give them healthy and nutritious food. It is ideal to start with fruits and then switch to more solid foods according to your baby’s eating skill. But talk with your pediatrician before serving eggs, fish, citrus, and yogurt if your baby is less than a year old because these foods can cause an allergic reaction.
When serving bananas to young babies, make sure they are ripe and thoroughly mashed. You can serve banana in the form of banana shake. Put ripe and healthy banana in a grinder with some milk/water. When cooked and mashed, sweet potatoes make a smooth puree that’s easy to eat for young babies. Sweet potatoes are a good source of potassium, vitamin C, and fiber and an excellent source of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that helps prevent certain types of cancer and mops up free radicals.
